Becoming a Professional at Work

To have a successful career, most people need to adopt behaviors and attitudes of professionalism. However, if you are new to the business world or are coming back from remote work, you may feel unsure about what companies require today. Therefore, these are a few tips to help you adopt and master professional behaviors.

Be Responsible and Accountable

First, take responsibility for the work your boss assigns you. Do your best to produce exceptional outcomes. If you are unsure about how to complete a project, ask for help. Act with integrity and do not lie about what you can or cannot do, especially if you have to complete projects by a strict deadline.

Understand that mistakes will happen, but when you make one, do not blow it off. Notify your direct supervisor about what happened. Then, accept responsibility and discuss what you can do better next time. Also, don’t hesitate to do more than just what your job entails.

Focus on Clear, Professional Communication

During your workday, you will likely write emails and other documents and speak with people. Use proper English, grammar, capitalization and punctuation when you write. Avoid acronyms or text speak. Your text should not read like something you would text or write to a friend. It should be clear, concise and correct.

Your speech should be correct as well. Avoid slang, rambling, mumbling and sarcasm. Speak clearly and respectfully to your coworkers and supervisors.

Treat People with Kindness

You will inevitably work with individuals you don’t get along with or care for. However, at all times, you should treat people with kindness and respect. Even if these individuals are not nice to you, you should be nice to them. Make it easy for them to work with you. If they speak harshly to you, let it go and do not allow it to ruin your day. You can make sure your encounters with these individuals are brief, but get everything handled before walking away.

Observe and Adopt the Corporate Culture

Every company has a corporate culture. These are actions, attitudes, values and beliefs that direct the staff of the company. Observe others in the office and adopt their behaviors and actions, within reason. For example, those around someone on the phone may lower their voices. In addition, staff members may call or go to a supervisor for urgent questions and send an email about those that are not urgent. Do not adopt behaviors that violate your values or the law, and if you find these, speak with a manager.

Your professionalism can significantly impact your success in your job and career. Test these strategies and others as you move into the workforce.
